Slingshot Readers,

We NEED your support. More specifically, the author of this article needs your support. If you've been enjoying our content, you know that a lot of work goes into our stories and although it may be a work of passion, writers gotta eat. If just half our readers gave 1 DOLLAR a month, one measly dollar, we could fund all the work from StuChiu, DeKay, Emily, Andrew (and even Vince). If you contribute 5 DOLLARS a month, we invite you to join our Discord and hang with the team. We wouldn't bother you like this if we didn't need your help and you can feel good knowing that 100% of your donation goes to the writers. We'd really appreciate your support. After all, you're what makes all this happen. Learn more

Chiu on This
A short and regular opinion blast from Stephen Chiu

‘Chiu on This’ is a short and regular opinion blast

At the Kiev Major today, BurNIng pulled off an insane game where he averaged 1,040 gold per minute. This was in a game where OG got a lot of kills and had killed all of the towers. This situation is classic Dota 2 and what originally made BurNIng so famous.

For those who don’t know, it is the single most egotistic way I know of to play any team game. The entire idea is that the four other players’ only job is to help the carry, but this comes with extreme detriments. The other team will always have a gold lead as a team, and because of that, you quickly lose map control. So you bet it all on your carry player to farm enough money that he alone can 1-v-5 with some help from the others.

That’s what makes it great for a spectator to watch, but as the meta has shifted and team play has gotten better, it has shifted out. We’ve seen some resurgence from it (notably OG last year had a “4 protect miracle” strat) and at this Major I’ve seen BurNIng, RTZ, hfn and miracle do it to varying degrees.

What I love about it is the implicit message from the star player: Give me the resources and I’ll get you the game.
