‘Chiu on This’ is a short and regular opinion blast

At this point, I’ve heard every reason as to why StarCraft 2 has died. The Koreans won too much. There was no structure to the calendar year. No new players. The game itself was bad. The game was too hardcore. The game was too casual Bl/infestor ruined everything. there was over-saturation. There was under-saturation. No one likes 1-v-1 games anymore. Match-fixing, cosmetics, the lack of narratives, League of Legends killed it, etc. It has become a grab bag bin where whatever you hate the most, you pick that as the reason as to why SC2 “died.” One of the more popular reasons is because of the “dead game” meme or mentality.

I understand why people latch on to the last one because, among all of the reasons, it is the most hurtful to the people who did try to do something in the game, whether it be running tournaments, playing them, etc. Not saying that I agree with the attitude or that it had no effect on the game itself, but there were so many different reasons that reducing it to that seems too simplistic to me.

As an aside, the only ones that made sense to me were no new players, it being a 1-v-1 game, match-fixing and a lack of structure to the calendar year. Koreans winning didn’t make sense to me as they won the majority of tournaments and people kept watching during the heyday of SC2. You can argue about the game itself, but I don’t think the quality of the game itself matters that much for esports beyond going over a certain threshold. “The game was too hard” didn’t make that much sense since a game like Dark Souls found a niche, so I don’t think it’s impossible for an esport to have a similar kind of niche. BL/infestor was terrible, but the game survived years after it. Over-saturation made some sense, but no one ever bothered to address why it was over-saturated, how it was and what to do about it. The game is now under-saturated, but that has more to do with ROI and is an aftereffect rather than the cause. Cosmetics is something people have clamored for, but I still don’t know how useful it is compared to LoL/CS:GO (for multiple design purposes, the skins psychologically work in different ways). The lack of narrative has nothing to do with the tournaments or players in the scene and more to do with other people’s inability to craft one. The rise of League of Legends had nothing to do with it as it could have easily been any other game that emerged. That is just the nature of video games as a whole.

I don’t know what “killed” SC2, but blaming it on the dead game attitude seems too simplistic.
