A three-week long Overwatch Anniversary event will take place to celebrate the one year since the game’s release.
Blizzard announced the event, which will run from May 23 to June 12 by releasing a YouTube video chronicling the game’s development since Day 1 of the game’s release. It went over each major event and character additions since launch as well as standout moments in the Overwatch fan community. With six unique seasonal events, three new heroes, and with four successful competitive seasons in the past year, Overwatch quickly became one of the most popular games online.
Blizzard did not release many details as to what the anniversary event will entail, but some details have been leaked through datamining, which showed purchase options for 50 anniversary loot boxes as well as a “Game of the Year Edition” in the works, as reported by Dot esports’ Scott Duwe. The anniversary loot boxes will have over 100 different items, including skins, voice lines, victory poses, and more.
Overwatch came out May 24, 2016 and quickly became one of the top five most popular games in the world. More details about Overwatch Anniversary are expected in the coming weeks.
