When you’re a Triple-A level developer, there are inherent expectations that you must meet. You can get away with milking your endemic audience for long periods of time with dlcs, skins, cosmetics, etc. But at some point you will go too far. This is especially bad if you happen to have a rival company who is doing everything right. Because in the minds of the public, you have set the bar so low that what the other company does in relation to you seems far better than usual.
I am talking about the release of Street Fighter V to Tekken 7. SFV was supposed to be a hyped release, but it was geared toward the casual audience. This is why many of the mechanics were watered down and the input lag was put in. While I understand where Capcom was coming from, the main point they missed was that casual players play the game for the single player content and the dearth of characters and lack of single player modes meant there was going to be less casual engagement anyway. The biggest problem with Capcom was the rootkit. This alone could be enough to turn your entire hardcore audience against you, but then they started the entire campaign of “Haters will be left behind.”
Tekken 7 in comparison has great online play, deep game play, a huge amount of characters and they are constantly improving their product since launch.
This scenario is of particular note since Capcom has never relinquished their spot as the biggest fighting game in the world. Will players finally leave to play a different game or are they using the release of a new game to vent their frustrations with Capcom? Exactly how far can a company go to alienating their hardcore audience before it backfires tremendously? That’s what I want to find out.
