Quarterfinal playoffs of ESL Cologne

Chiu on This
A short and regular opinion blast from Stephen Chiu

‘Chiu on This’ is a short and regular opinion blast

These are some thoughts I’ve had while watching ESL One Cologne so far. The condition for Natus Vincere to win was to have two of their three stars show up. For whatever reason, this has happened this event with GuardiaN having one of his best events this year. The only other time he looked this good was IEM Katowice. A1mple is still amazing, and once the team solves the leadership issue, this could quickly become a championship contender.

NiP looked more alive than at any point in a long time. f0rest and GeT_RiGhT have looked better than they have in a long time. But once it got to the playoffs, REZ and draken didn’t play up to their earlier standards as they showed inexperience.

Swiss format sucks because it compounds upsets like an avalanche while already forcing two teams onto the middle map between the two.

Skadoodle is having his best tournament since 2015. Shroud is having his first good international tournament since 2015.

OpTic seemed to have a lot of good factors going for them. Tarik’s simple call style seemed to fit the OpTic players better. I think the two biggest factors were the lack of pressure to perform (as opposed to the Major Quals) and RUSH’s resurgence in form. RUSH is the difference maker for the team and he sets the tone for them.
