After the organization’s decision to disband Afreeca Freecs Red, one of its two Overwatch rosters, Afreeca bolstered its remaining team that will compete in the fourth season of OGN APEX. With the addition of brek and Kalios, the Afreeca Freecs have eight active players, three of whom are tanks.
The two additions also seem to be in response to the expected absence of main tanker Kim “Mano” Dong-gyu, who will compete in the Overwatch World Cup as part of South Korea’s team. As the tournament has some overlap with the schedule of Season 4 of APEX, the three tankers are expected to be swapped in and out — at least at the beginning of the season.
Kalios was previously a member of wNv Teamwork in China and reached a Skill Rating of 5,000, which was the highest in the Chinese server at one point. After that he joined RunAway through a tryout, but due to a contractual problem, he was unable to see play in Season 3 of APEX. RunAway’s owner, Yoon “Runner” Dae-hoon, later detailed that Kalios was set to leave if the contract issue wasn’t solved by the team’s match against Kongdoo Uncia in the group stage of the Season 3 playoffs, and now Kalios has joined another org.
Brek was previously a member of MVP Infinity. He is also most well known for his skills with Reinhardt as the team’s main tanker in previous seasons. Afreeca Freecs Blue has been one of the best teams in APEX, with three playoffs berths, a runner-up finish and a third place finish in three seasons. APEX Season 4 begins Aug. 11.
