SG e-sports, the Brazilian Dota 2 team that made history for its region by competing in a Major, has disbanded.
The organization announced Tuesday through the team has decided to disband based on the wishes of the players. The former members of SG e-sports — Danylo “KINGRD” Nascimento, Otávio “Tavo” Gabriel, Adriano “4dr” Machado, Emilano “c4t” Ito and William “hFn” Medeiros — are now free agents.
A prominent Dota 2 team in South America, SG won the Brasil Game Cup 2017 Rio and became the first Brazilian team to compete in a Major after qualifying for the Kiev Major in April. SG’s appearance in the Kiev Major also ended the two year drought of South American teams in Dota 2 Majors. SG finished last in the group stage but upset Team Secret in the playoffs, earning international praise for the unexpected run to the quarterfinals.
SG competed in the South American qualifiers for The International 7 in June. Although the team made it to the finals of the tournament, it lost to Infamous — the team that sent SG e-sports to the losers bracket earlier in the semifinals — 3-0, keeping SG from reaching the largest stage in Dota 2.
According to the announcement, SG does not intend to bow out of Dota 2 and will seek to improve its roster.
