After nerfing D.Va’s new ability, the Overwatch team is looking to buff her controversial Defense Matrix ability a little bit in the Public Test Realm.
A Grand Master tier player Slade wrote a comprehensive deconstruction of the recent changes to D.Va, specifically addressing the nerfs to her Defense Matrix and Micro Missiles ability. The player wrote that all of her abilities are pretty sub-par, and with her new offensive ability nerfed, it takes her further away from the offensive tank design that the team wanted to take her. Principle designer for Overwatch Geoff Goodman responded that there is a change coming to the PTR soon, which will address the concerns of D.Va players.
“The missiles were just a bit too strong at their previous values, especially considering you can now fly and shoot at the same time,” he wrote. “Even at the reduced value they still pose a serious threat if you can land a majority of them on a single target, especially when used in combination when her weapons and flight. That said, there is another change coming to PTR soon (maybe tomorrow) that will help her out quite a bit. The Defense Matrix regeneration rate is increasing by 25%. This lets her generally use DM more often, while still keeping the new 2 second cap on a single use.”
D.Va’s Defense Matrix is one of the most powerful defensive abilities in the game and allows her to pocket healers by keeping them alive or mark enemy DPS’ to keep them out of the fight. The nerf to the ability was long overdue, and the new Micro Missiles ability to make her more aggressive went live in the PTR patch on Aug. 24. However the ability got nerfed in the Wednesday update to the PTR, cutting the damage of each missile down by 25 percent, placing her in an awkward position of being unable to be an effective defensive or offensive tank choice.
By keeping the duration of the Matrix last half as long in the current live values but making the ability recharge more quickly seems like a happy medium at the moment. On paper, this will allow highly skilled players to use the ability precisely and frequently in order to maximize D.Va’s defensive capabilities. There’s still no firm release date of the changes to D.Va to the live servers.
