Seasonal bans temporarily removed in Overwatch while Blizzard fixes bug that inadvertently levies them

Blizzard acknowledged Wednesday a rare bug in the competitive mode of Overwatch has caused players to lose skill rating progress or receive seasonal bans without any prior penalties.

“In the meantime, we’ll be removing the seasonal ban for all players affected by this bug as well as restoring their skill rating,” game director Jeff Kaplan wrote. “To date, this bug has impacted fewer than 200 accounts, but we’ll continue to monitor for additional occurrences and provide assistance until we can implement a permanent fix. We don’t have an ETA to share right now for when the fix will go live, but we’ll update this thread as soon more information becomes available.”

The issue is quite serious, as skill ratings are what determines ranks of players, and they can be gained or lost during competitive games after a win or loss. The weight of seasonal bans have also recently become heftier, as three competitive season bans lead to a permanent ban from competitive play. It’s unclear what  triggers the bug or how players could prevent it.
