On the EU LCS Financial Crisis

Chiu on This
A short and regular opinion blast from Stephen Chiu

Following this entire EU LCS debacle has been strange as Reddit’s collective opinion about the entire problem has been weird as many of the assume EU teams are being manipulative and are running fine. I don’t have a strong opinion about the entire issue as I don’t understand the situation and don’t have the background to deduce how much money these EU teams are losing. But if you just look at the overall context of the league, it seems obvious that EU teams should be running in the red. Here are some points that have come into the public space that we know of:

1) NA LCS teams with a larger fan base, more viewers, and better business men (overall) have been running in the red.

2) EU LCS teams tried to apply for NA LCS

3) We know that G2’s Ocelote thinks many of the EU LCS teams are trash at the business side.

4)A lot of the big money in the EU region has sidestepped LCS and gone into CS:GO.

5) UoL said they have been big in the red for a long time.

I’m not a financial expert, but it seems pretty clear to me that EU LCS is not making much money if everyone who has a motive to make money is trying to avoid it like the plague.
