Boring Metas

‘Chiu on This’ is a regular and short opinion blast

Overwatch current meta is boring. This is because there is too much strength in the front line of tanks resulting in 3-2 or 4-2 comps. I may write a longer article sometime in the future, but suffice to say this reminds me greatly of another metas that have been deemed terrible in other games.

They include the BL/infestor and SH/mech era of SC2. The Illusion cancer of Dota2. There are other terrible metas, but these resemble the current meta problems the most for Overwatch in design.

The problem with the current meta is that after the novely wears off, the game is strategically and tactically the same. Large blobs fighting each other without any kind of payoff for the viewer. In BL/infestor this culminated in the infamous Annyeong vs HerO 2 hour game where Annyeong made Hero  mine out his map and lose it all on carriers making interceptors to kill 60 spores and 50 infestors.

In SH vs Mech this culminated in the 2.5 hour slugathon known as Stephano vs Petreaus. Petreaus had a future once, but I swear to God that game killed his soul.

In Dota 2, the answer is more complicated. The early and mid game is more action packed than it ever was, but the essential problem was the rubber band effect makes a natural comeback mechanic for the team that is down on levels and gold to make it all up in one big team fight. To avoid giving the team an edge back, teams have gone to cracking the high ground with illusions which are cost free.

Icefrog is trying to fix that proble, but we’ll see how it goes in 7.00+.

Anyway the problem with OW meta right now is it doesn’t feel like it awards skill, its compositionally, strategically and tactically feels the same each game and it doesn’t help that the maps are preselected to emphasize that effect.
