Riot Games is the developer, publisher, and esports organizer of the popular game League of Legends. Founded in 2006 by Brandon Beck and Marc Merrill, the company is located out of West Los Angeles, Calif., but also has offices in Berlin, Dublin, Hong Kong, Istanbul, Mexico City, Moscow, New York City, St. Louis, Santiago, São Paulo, Seoul, Shanghai, Singapore, Sydney, Taipei, and Tokyo.
Employees at the company include prominent developers of Dota, a game that heavily influenced League of Legends. The game was released in 2009 after an investment of $7 million in 2008, and the professional scene began in 2010. Riot is owned by Chinese giant Tencent, and League of Legends has more than 100 million players per month.
Riot Games has a total of 29 departments. Among them is the Art department, which is in charge of the various art assets ranging from concept art, animation, and visual effects; esports department, which oversees the game observers, referees, and event coordinators, and the publishing department, which oversees brand management, communications, and video production.
The size and scope of League of Legends grew and most recently reached a new revenue peak of an estimated $1.6 billion in the year of 2015.
