Why would Innovation be a bonjwa?

‘Chiu on This’ is a short and regular opinion blast

Among all of the players in the modern age, no other player has been proposed to be a bonjwa as much as INnoVation. But I don’t know why. Beyond a good aligulac rating, there is nothing in the last two years that tells me he could even come close to claim such a title. Online games are OK, but in the end if you want to get such a title then you must do it on LAN. In INnoVation’s case, he has been in four GSL seasons from 2016-2017, two SSL seasons, one IEM, one Katowice and one Afreeca Super Tournament.

His total victories? One IEM that was great and one SSL that had a Proleague round robin that let him skip the playoffs, and thus, I must rate it as a weaker tournament.

Beyond that, he has two quarterfinals at GSL S1 2017 and Katowice. Beyond that, he has failed twice in 2016 GSL Code A and lost in the round of 16 in the other three tournaments.

Bonjwa as a term seems to be completely misunderstood and is ill-defined. The original five that were put up were BoxeR, NaDa, iloveoov, sAviOr, and Flash. The title wasn’t given to the totality of their achievements, but rather the fact that they dominated a certain period of time and won multiple titles. This has never been the case with INnoVation as he has never won multiple Tier 1 events within a six month time frame, only winning one each year.

All of this isn’t to say INnoVation isn’t one of the all time great StarCraft 2 players. He is. I personally don’t think he’s moved up much further than he did back when I made the original list, I can at least understand putting him into a high ranking if you’re taking up the totality of his career. But his LotV achievements thus far aren’t close to being bonjwa status and I still can’t figure out why anyone would think that.
