Regionalization for Player Associations?

‘Chiu on This’ is a short and regular opinion blast

Over the weekend, Xyp9x announced the founding of a players association for Danish esports players. He was one of the key players in its creation and did it by cooperating with DEF-sport, the union behind the Danish players association for badminton, basketball and ice hockey. It is called Esport Spillerforeningen. This is a great move and one that no one has thought of in dealing with esports player associations. Instead of splitting them up by game, he made it regional. This makes a lot more sense when you consider that one of the big hurdles to overcome in the past that kept players from doing this was the difference in legal code between countries. This could be one of the ways for a players union to work, assuming that the pro player base within a country is large enough.

In a different context, I find it sort of funny that LemonNation stated that that was no way League of Legends players would make an association by themselves and it was up to Riot Games. This reminded me of a similar blog last week where someone stated that it wasn’t up to the fans, but Riot to pay someone to keep the esports wiki updated for LoL. I don’t know if it’s because Riot has such a tyrannical rule over the game that this is the only viable solution or because they have been under the fist of Riot for so long that it’s created a community whose first response is to have Riot take the reigns.
