Based on a trademark application filed to the United States Patent and Trademark Office, the Overwatch League team in Miami could be named the Miami Mayhem.
The application was filed Oct. 10 by eSports Play, LLC. The goods and services listed under the trademark include “computer programs for video and computer games,” various clothing items and accessories, bags and backpacks, and “entertainment services in the nature of organizing and conducting organized multiplayer video-game competitions.”
Of course, there’s no way to be certain this will indeed be the team’s name, but it sure seems like a possibility.
Trademarks were filed in recent weeks for the San Francisco Shock, Los Angeles Gladiators and New York Excelsior, all potential Overwatch League teams based on the applications. The owners of the San Francisco franchise, NRG Esports, revealed Monday the team would indeed be called the Shock. ESPN reported one of the two Los Angeles franchises would be called the Gladiators.
The Miami franchise belongs to Misfits CEO Ben Spoont. Per Blizzard’s rules, every Overwatch League team is obligated to make a new brand specifically to Overwatch League. The Shock, the Dallas Fuel and the Shanghai Dragons have all announced their names so far.
Overwatch League Season 1 begins Jan. 10.
