The Kraft Sports Group’s Boston franchise in the Overwatch League will be called the Boston Uprising, the organization announced Tuesday.
“We are excited to unveil our team name, logo and colors for our newest sports property,” Robert Kraft said in a news release. “Esports already has a large global audience, with Overwatch being among the most popular games with more than 35 million players worldwide. We look forward to introducing sports fans in Boston to the new Overwatch League with a local team they can support. We are also eager to use the Boston Uprising to introduce Boston and our franchise to the global community of esports. We are currently assembling a team that we anticipate will compete for championships, as Boston sports fans have come to expect from all of their professional teams.”
The name of the Boston Uprising was based on the region’s part in United States history as the birthplace of the American Revolution. The three colors chosen for the team are blue, yellow and black, with blue and yellow also prominently featured on Boston’s flag.
The custom skin for the team belongs to Soldier 76, with the font colors of black and blue. The official logo takes the shape of a shield and also shows the initials of the team.
Boston will be one of the 12 teams competing in the inaugural season of the Overwatch League, which starts on Jan. 10. The Boston Uprising is the fifth team in the league to officially announce its brand specific to the Overwatch League, following the Shanghai Dragons, Dallas Fuel, San Francisco Shock, and Los Angeles Valiant.
